Mineral sunscreens act as a physical barrier between you and UV rays, scattering the light when it hits your skin. Chemical sunscreens tend to be more irritating, as allergies to the active ingredients are more common. Some chemicals have been linked to endocrine disruption, although the data isn’t conclusive. Second, there have been studies suggesting that chemical sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate can seep into water while you swim and bleach coral reefs. The first: They need to be applied more often than mineral sunscreens because they’re not photostable and break down upon exposure to UV light. There are a few drawbacks with chemical sunscreens. Because of their properties, chemical filters tend to be more cosmetically elegant and can be formulated into lightweight moisturizers and oils. This process takes about 15 minutes, so if you’re using chemical sunscreen filters, then you should be giving yourself at least that much time before heading outdoors. These work by absorbing the sun’s rays, turning it into heat, then releasing said heat through skin. Chemical sunscreens use organic materials like oxybenzone, avobenzone, homosalate, octinoxate, octocrylene, and octisalate to offer sun protection. There are two types of sunscreen filters: chemical and mineral. (And remember: These sunscreens should be used in addition to hats and protective clothing, and wearing any of them doesn’t excuse you from spending time in the shade, since no sunscreen can completely prevent sun damage.) To find the best facial sunscreens to use, we asked Stein and 11 more dermatologists and skin-care professionals to recommend sunscreens for different skin types and activities. This can be tricky, though, especially if you’re prone to breakouts or have sensitive skin. You should always reapply sunscreen after every two hours in the sun, Stein says, even if you don’t burn easily. Jennifer Stein, a dermatologist at NYU Langone Health, says everyone should generally look for s unscreens with broad-spectrum coverage (which protects against UVB rays that cause burning and UVA rays that cause lasting damage) and an SPF of 30 or higher, and she notes that a high SPF doesn’t mean you can go hours without reapplying. It helps with everything from hyperpigmentation to fine lines to acne, and protects skin from sun damage, which can lead to a host of other problems. Nearly every skin concern can be exasperated by not wearing SPF. It’s a daily must-do, right up there with washing your face. After years of beauty reporting and countless conversations with dermatologists and estheticians, I’ve learned that sunscreen is a nonnegotiable, year-round thing.

With less than a week left until the beginning of QuakeCon 2021, fans won’t have to wait too long to finally find out if a new Quake game is actually in the works. And with Machine Games’ relatively successful track record with the Wolfenstein series, there’s definitely a better possibility that the Quake series could make a proper comeback. If the rumor does end up being true, it would be great news for fans of the Quake franchise. So it wouldn’t be too surprising if id Software tapped Machine Games to work on a new Quake game. Machine Games also worked on all of the most recent Wolfenstein games from 2014’s The New Order to Wolfenstein: Youngblood in 2019, giving the company a good history of working with id Software as well. Machine Games previously worked on the Dimension of the Past DLC for the original Quake to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary back in 2016, which gives the studio at least some experience working on the franchise. See Shpeshal_Nick's reaction to the QuakeCon schedule on Twitter here. In an episode of the Xbo圎ra podcast, Shpeshal_Nick shared that id Software is allegedly working alongside Machine Games on a new Quake title and the release of Quakeon 2021’s schedule definitely lends weight to that rumor. Looking at the schedule that’s been unveiled, one of the first segments during the three-day event is entitled “ Celebrating 25 Years of Quake with id Software and Machine Games,” which falls in line with a previous rumor from Xbo圎ra’s Shpeshal_Nick. In spite of the series’ recent hardships, the annual QuakeCon convention is still going strong even after 24 years and Bethesda recently released the schedule for this year’s iteration, which has hinted at the possibility that a new Quake game may be in the works. Last week, Bethesda announced the schedule for QuakeCon 2021, a celebration of the game franchise and other Bethesda hits. However, while Doom and Wolfenstein have seen a massive resurgence in their popularity over the past few years due to their recent releases, Quake has struggled to stay relevant over the past decade. Once again, this reveal of a new Quake game should likely be happening later today when QuakeCon 2021 kicks off. Bethesda is set to kick off Quake Con 2021 later this afternoon, but ahead of that time, it looks like one of the publisher's big announcements. Even though they aren’t technically the first first-person shooter ever made, the three games from id Software practically created the genre and influenced its growth in the years following their respective first releases. That, or one of the other leading theories: A new Quake game that takes cues from the latest Doom releases.Quake, Doom, and Wolfenstein, are considered by many as the three titles that popularized the FPS genre. Maybe we're getting a multiplayer-only Doom? Could be. Though, saying that, it is odd that the job posting does ask for Doom experience so specifically. Since Doom Eternal was meant to be the last Doom in the current series, it seems unlikely that id Software is looking to reboot the series already. Browser compatibilityīecause WebContainers make use of the sharedArrayBuffer extensively, there is limited browser support that is mostly scoped for use in Chromium. Without rolling our own server implementation, this limits us to serving the application with some sort of backend service. A potential workaround is to use a service worker like the COI Service Worker, but this is far from ideal. This is problematic because if we want to serve a static page on, say, GitHub pages, we can’t control the required headers to be served. To set up WebContainers, we need to supply the required headers in our Vite config with the instruction below: For an in-depth look, check out this great article on web.dev. COOP controls the level of isolation between different origins, while COEP protects users from cross-site data leaks. Setting up cross-origin isolationĬOOP (Cross Origin Opener Policy) and COEP (Cross Origin Embedder Policy) are two web security standards that can be used with Service Workers to prevent cross-site attacks and protect user privacy. To use the sharedArrayBuffer in a web application, developers need to explicitly opt-in and use a Content Security Policy (CSP) and disable access to the buffer from untrusted code. However, this feature has been disabled by default in many web browsers since 2018 due to security concerns related to Meltdown and Spectre-style attacks. It is used to make web applications that require concurrent processing, such as audio and video processing, graphics rendering, and machine learning, faster.īy sharing memory, these applications can avoid the overhead of copying data between threads and reduce the need for synchronisation mechanisms. The sharedArrayBuffer is a JavaScript object that represents a fixed-length binary data buffer that can be shared between different execution threads. Sounds amazing! But running untrusted code on a web page can be a risk, as it can potentially access sensitive user information or execute malicious code. Web applications often run third-party code like ad scripts or user-generated content to provide their full range of features.

So this is horror with a strong, accusatory sociopolitical message attached, as Andy’s reemergence comes also to represent a whole nation’s return of the repressed. Andy may be a vampiric wraith, requiring blood – and willing to kill for it – in order to maintain a semblance of renewed life yet his zombie-like withdrawal, his sleeplessness and his affect-free propensity to violence, though certainly all markers of the undead genre, are also symptoms of the PTSD that afflicted so many Vietnam vets, themselves unrecognisably transformed by their wartime experience, and back in a country that they themselves could no longer see in the same way. Yet unlike that earlier, simpler film, Deathdream comes with an obvious and devastating subtext. Like Clark’s previous, much lower-budgeted feature Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things (1972) – also written with Alan Ormsby – Deathdream features supernatural resurrection, with Andy seemingly conjured back to life by his mother’s prayers and devotion. After all, the film’s opening sequence unequivocally shows Andy killed in action, shot in the head, as he helps a fallen comrade. So his unannounced arrival late one night is regarded by the Brooks as a welcome miracle – and, in a way, it is, given that the rumours of his demise were not, in fact, false. The Brooks had not been expecting Andy’s return – after all, they had earlier received a letter from the army reporting his death in combat, even if his doting mother Christine (Lynn Carlin) had refused to countenance that her beloved son really was dead. “I went through it too,” adds Charles, “but when I came back, I didn’t act like that!”Ī veteran of the Second World War, a patriarch par excellence and the sort of man who happily sent America’s innocent youth into Indochina, Charles had bullied his sensitive young son into signing up for service – but Vietnam, a war still waging at the time Canadian director/co-writer Bob Clark made Deathdream (aka Dead of Night), was, at least in moral terms, an altogether murkier engagement than the fight against Hitler and Tojo, and ended up a conflict at home as much as abroad in an ideologically and generationally divided America. Why won’t he at least let us tell anyone that he’s home?” This is what Charles Brooks (John Marley) wonders about his son, Andy (Richard Backus), recently returned from Vietnam, and a ghost of his former self. He sits out in the yard all day long, or up in his room. “Why is he so different? He won’t talk with us. Cast: Richard Backus, John Marley, Lynn Carlin, Anya Ormsby, Jane Daly, Mal Jones |
